The Faces Of War By Salvador Dali
In this painting we see a horrified face and in it's mouth and eyes are more horrified faces, and once again in those horrified face's mouth and eyes are more horrified faces. We see here the warping of reality started by Goya is continued and taken to the extreme which is seen political commentary around the time of the Spanish Civil War. As common in Dali's paintings we seek a very bleak background perhaps illustrating how bleak Dali sees the world at this time. The paintings name faces of war with the image of horrified faces, Dali is attempting to show us that anyone who looks on war is horrified. Also the faces within the faces may be at testament to ripple effect of seeing these horrors. As Peter Monteath tell us the Spanish Civil War caused many people to return and translate their experiences into art. This could be what Goya is trying to get at with the faces within faces that as people go off to the front lines they become horrified by war. Then when the turn their experiences into art they believe that views this art or hear about their experiences become horrified as well. Why do you think artist like Dali and Picasso choose to use surrealism to make their commentary on the Spanish Civil War.
