The Conquest Of Mexico by Unknown Spanish Artist.
Analysis
Perhaps one of the very first paintings to offer a political commentary on Spain. In the painting we see an image of Spain ships, cavalry, and cannons being used on the native people. We do have perhaps a praise of the Spaniards in the painting due to the detail used to depict them, in contrast with the native people where not as much detail is used and on the right look to almost blend together. However this also a critique of the Conquest, especially looking at the table setup in the background behind the second group of natives. Also the natives don't seem to be offering any resistance against the Spanish forces. The critique is somewhat subtle because at the time art mainly praised the empire, and so critiques had to be subtle because of the power both the church and the king. Any artist that displeases either could easily be tried for heresy under the inquisition.
