Meadow/Pilgrimage of San Isdiro by Francisco Goya
These two images both depict the Spanish Holiday and Festival of San Isdiro however they were painted thirty years apart. With the meadow being one of Goya's early during the Enlightenment and the Pilgrimage being one of Goya's last works and painted after the Enlightenment. Gone is the subtle critique/commentary completely the name of the painting directly references Spain and his painting feature horrific figures. Possible meant to illustrate how horrific Goya now perceived Spain to be after the Enlightenment. Also the very colors of the painting have changed instead of the bright colors and beautiful sky in the meadow, we have very dark colors and dark cloudy sky. Also in the pilgrimage we see an aspect of surrealism or warping of reality come into play. This aspect of warping reality in political commentary would be echoed in the works of later artist and their political commentary such as dali. Why do you think Goya decided to essentially repaint the meadow? Why do you think Goya paints the people in the Pilgrimage almost blending together?
